Following on from Foreground, the closing track of Veckatimest, Grizzly Bear’s new track Sleeping Ute from their new (as yet untitled) album sparked mass hype all around the world. Both the track name and acclaimed band were trending worldwide on twitter, a sign of much to come. The album consists of 10 tracks, with the unheard 9 each lying in wait, tempting the countless thousands of soon-to-be listeners.
Having released Veckatimest exactly three years and one week ago, the anticipation of the masses had been growing and growing and growing, with frontman Ed Droste often hinting about the progress the band had been making whilst recording in Texas. Finally, when Droste announced that the band were mixing the final track of the album, the end was nigh.
If Sleeping Ute is anything to go by, this album could very well be their best yet, improving upon the wondrously ethereal sounds of Horn Of Plenty, and yet Chris Bear keeps the integral cymbal-based percussion that provided such a complimentary backdrop in Yellow House and Veckatimest. Droste’s vocals serenade throughout the song, often with a bluesy element to them at the end of lyrical phrases. The tangly guitar riffs pause at precisely the right moments and Chris Taylor’s synths bring a background celestial quality to the track. This is Grizzly Bear, doing what they do best.
