Producer Of The Year

The term ‘dance music’ is one which has been diluted over the years – the Beats endorsed stylings of French commercial rap foster child David Guetta and the mind melting syncopated drum patterns of Cornish pirate Aphex Twin all fall under the umbrella of this title. This aforementioned dilution has therefore provoked a reaction, necessitating the creation of sub categories for tastemakers eager to further explore the genre.

The UK is a melting pot for such categories, our proud island nation being the home of jungle, drum and bass, and garage. However, the bass driven melodies and unrelenting speed of these genres (and their assorted sub genres) can leave tracks sounding emotionally brittle – best suited to faceless arenas, steroid fuelled sound systems and the chemically enhanced rapture so often found in such places.

So when a producer releases material so immediately warm and resonant, they are immediately elevated above the blind, Logic wielding masses. Thus it is with great fanfar that we at Kollektivnye are proud to present to you their Producer Of The Year: Dauwd.

Reminiscent of Jacques Greene and Burial in his ability to convey emotion through the medium of electronic music, Welsh bred Dauwd has been quietly releasing material on Pictures Music in 2011, an ambitious and ambient sound present throughout his recordings. With ‘Could It Be/Shimmer’ cementing its status a slow burning summer grower and the follow up 12” ’What’s There’, released in November lounging in waves of shimmering synthesisers, 2011 was a year in which Dauwd reached levels of emotional maturity as yet unseen in London’s electronic music scene, backed by an ear for unravelling discordant sound and moulding it into something aurally spectacular (see the intro for ‘Ikopol’ for futher details).We’re excited. You probably should be too.
