Locussolus – Berghain / Telephone (2012)

One of the most hairy DJs and producers of the last twenty years (at least) is DJ Harvey, the Cambridge man currently residing in Los Angeles. He first embarked on his Locussolus

 (“the only place” in Latin) project in 2010, accompanied by Sam Fox, Tara Selleck, Josh and Marcy. Remarkable and remarked, their eponymous debut album (and first of the long career of Harvey) was released in 2011.

To our delight, they are already back with a double single called Berghain / Telephone , recorded and published in Venice Beach July 9, 2012 on the blistering Uruguayan label International Feel

(a favourite of ours). According to the press release, the song “Berghain” is inspired by one of DJ Harvey’s experiences in the Berlin club of the same name. After his set, he would have ventured across the decks and have spent several hours getting carried away in the revelry and the result is a tech house, minimal, industrial and explosive gem. Certainly surprising, but unmistakably Harvey, the track shows that one can easily combine synth funk with acid house.

If side A is the Mr. Hyde of DJ Harvey, the B side, “Telephone” is the Dr. Jekyll. No less excellent, this song reminds some tracks on the album released last year, more pop-orientated and along the lines of tracks such as “I Want It” and “Next To You”. Cheerful and casual, this is Harvey’s disco boogie side resurfaced and it again brings a lot of surprises including a guitar solo straight out of the 80s.

Confusing for some, the tandem Berghain / Telephone demonstrates an eclecticism and originality unique in the current production house.
