Le Pain Quotidien – Charlie Tango

We had a rendezvous or two. A swig in a bar that had an incredibly large x-ray of some human lungs mounted on the wall and a vis a vis gig, exclusively for me. Charlie Tango are two guys that live in Lyon, but that’s where the similarity ends. Under the pseudonyms ‘Charlie’ and ‘Piergeek’, Charlie stands tall, skinny and ubiquitously underneath his trilby, while Piergeek, a warm, rotund gentlemen, dons a pair of spectacles and some might say, folliclely-challenged. A pleasingly, and rare juxtaposition. We hiked up to the iconic Fouviere for the first video under nightfall with a crisp snap to the air. We arrived too late to film inside the exquisite cathedral, but the backdrop of Lyon’s lightplay was more than enough to suffice. When we spoke, Charlie stressed the importance of lyrics to him and how his tended to be sorrowful, but when playing, the music formed around the words in harmony as he leant back against the frosty rails with his head hung. Piergeek remained a swaying presence, embodying the strokes of the violin while the palette of polkadots behind were luminous. It was a satisfyingly apt scene, but made our way before frostbite set in.
