GMM with Alexander Robotnick – Don’t Ask Me Why / Love Supreme (1986)

Alexander Robotnick a.k.a. Maurizio Dami is an icon of Italian disco who made his bow on the dance scene in the early 80s and remains active today.

After the success of ‘Love Problems’

(1983), he joined Giovanotti Mondani Meccanici (GMM), a group specializing in graphics and multimedia video installations. The group initially focussed on ambient music and soundtracks for films, before releasing a 1986 EP on the legendary Fuzz Dance label containing two gems of Italo disco. The first, ‘Do not Ask Me Why’ is a track with a post-punk feel that could have come straight out of Factory Records, whilst also being somewhat reminiscent of Grace Jones.

The second, ‘Love Supreme’ whose name is obviously inspired by the John Coltrane track of the same name

, is a moment of pure happiness. It is repetitive to the point of becoming bewitching and peaks with an improvised saxophone solo courtesy of legendary Italian jazz musician Stefano Cocco Cantini. This is without a doubt my favourite Italo track of all time.

This EP has become difficult to find and of course expensive, but Hot Elephant Music

, Alexander Robotnick’s label, had the bright idea to release a digital version of ‘Love Supreme’ in 2011, which has four different versions of piece which are available on Juno Download .
