Red Stripe’s take on environmentalism, or at least efficiency was an interesting one. To be honest, their aim had a certain indeterminacy and this is probably from where most of my interest stemmed.

They presumably rode ‘sound artist’ Mr Yuri Suzuki in from Tokyo on a motorbike, to lay out his ambitious plan. The innate fusion to Red Stripe’s homeland of Jamaica – the roots of music where to be formed through a mass of collected Red Stripe cans, to be a giant sound system. Although it’s doubtful how much the cans actually contributed technically, it was an impressive structure. This was all nicely complimented the other soulful edifice of Jamaica – a hearty Jerk Chicken and rice meal.

The sound system was composed of 5000 cans (partly amassed at this year’s Notting Hill Carnival), however, on a scale it was more towards Marcel Duchamp’s Urinal than the Colosseum. Yet with my cynicism aside, it is pleasing to see these forays that although for publicity, may also show productivity.

 

 

 

With events regarding the OCCUPY movement spiralling in and out of control, wild hysteria takes over making it difficult to see whether momentum is building or miserably fading for those involved in the ongoing challenge against Wall Street. This year, all over the world, we have seen a fascinating development in the role of social networking to expose and empower righteous socio-political movements. Showing solidarity to our brothers and sisters bearing the cold out there on the streets of New York, the multifacted platform of Kollektivnye offers you a live stream to show that we stand strong (albeit via the internet) to those fighting a hugely worthwhile cause.

Ahead of ATP’s Nightmare Before Christmas 3 Day Festival, held at Butlin’s Holiday Centre in Minehead from 9-11 December, we have got hold of this exclusive mix from Daniel Snaith a.k.a. Caribou.

The festival is curated by Les Savy Fav on the 9th, Battles on the 10th and closed up by Caribou on the 11th, in celebration of this Snaith has put together the following mix from his favourite cuts of those he has secured to perform on what promises to be a thrilling final day of a brilliant festival. Whilst it would be lazy to place Giraffage (real name Charlie Lin) amongst LA’s ‘beat’ scene (Lin after all resides in San Francisco), it is undeniable that the Pacific climate offers musicians a canvas complete with a somewhat warmer palette.


But whilst Giraffage retains these Cali roots, his direct influences lie closer to the UK – a point illustrated by his remix of Slow Magic’s ‘Feel Flows’. Reminiscent of Star Slinger and Gold Panda, this hazy slice of bedroom pop is full of swelling piano riffs, longing vocal samples and textured drum patterns. The release of his forthcoming album should only serve to strengthen his glitchy credentials.

In a follow-up to the visceral photographs from Kerem Görkem which we presented here

last week, it seems only right to give you all a tip off about a revealing three-part report on the Athens Riots by our chums over at Vice. The team meet a number of protesters with differing takes on the uprising, all however seem well aware of (and worryingly unshaken by) the impending tear gas vs. molotov cocktail battle.

 

While part one focuses on the build-up to the two-day protest, part two sees the team get right into the thick of things, with the camera man seemingly coughing up half a lung’s worth of blood after furrowing into the heart of the mêlée without a gas mask (silly sausage) or even a dose of maalox & water solution which itself is a hopeless remedy a good deal of the time. Quite startling are the shots of sartorially geared business types, nonchalantly supping on an espresso whilst a line of riot police are organised metres away, clearly the irony of their blatant indifference with the situation (due to financial comfort) in the face of the austerity cuts that have provoked the riots is entirely lost on them. Its hard to imagine that they finished off their ‘lunch’ without some sort of paint-based reminder that the old adage of ‘the rich getting richer, whilst the poor get poorer’ is one that currently inspires the ranker of a good deal of their kinsmen.

 

And so to the final part of this report, the second day of protests and the day that the austerity package is initially passed in the Greek Government. As the dust clears from yesterday’s ‘mild’rumpus, all of the different troops of protesters gather in supposedly unified opposition to the Government’s plans, but things start to crumble from within…

featured on the ‘There Will Be Blood’ Soundtrack the Radiohead duo craft a heavily layered backdrop for Doom’s trademark flow. As part of ASOSxVice’s new series of films hunting down painfully cool and successful young things from cities all around the world, this short interview below is one that really caught our eye. Lev Tanju is the founder of PΔLΔCE Skateboards, a team/brand that despite being just two and a half years old are already the hottest property on the London skate scene and are making their mark worldwide.

The brand, selling clothing and hardware exist in order to support financially the small but impressive team of professional skaters (including the mercurial Lucien Clarke) that Lev has assembled and that is one of the many charms of the PΔLΔCE D.I.Y. aesthetic that has no doubt contributed to their commercial success thus far. Another really eye-catching facet of this comes in the shape of the videos Lev shoots of the team, all of which are made using VHS and brilliantly edited resulting in some seriously brilliant skate videos, an example of which is below.

The bottom line however, remains that these guys are seriously good at what they do, which is re-appropriating the fruits of expansive city planning for their own jaw-dropping amusement. Now, prepare to enjoy a skating video more than you have in years.
