Battle of the Drumlines

We love a good documentary short here at KLLKT and are pleased to have come across a fine one in the form of Peter Crosby

‘s eight minute Battle of the Drumlines. A fine reminder of the many extensions beyond amateur sport available to American youngsters, the film focusses on April’s annual Battle of the Drumlines hosted by the Brooklyn Steppers Marching Band . An event that looks to draw the finest  drumline talent from the Tri-state area, a selection of Brooklyn-based bands are joined by the ever so dapper North Carolina A&T Cold Steel.

The film is quick to point out that more than just a sporting sideshow, the bands are an important part of the Brooklyn community. They stand to reward their youthful members dedication and practice with a marvellous level of camaraderie,  a means of steering clear of trouble and a possible route into college. A tradition more readily associated with Southern State colleges, the drumline scene in New York is one that uses music to empower its community.

As much as we only get a small insight into the competition, the creative expression not only in the music but the dance and attire make for an engrossing watch as the slickly edited short takes us from the practice room to the competition finals. Produced by the ever impressive Show Love
