American Juggalo

I still don’t quite know what to make of this.  Is it a sympathetic attempt at giving a voice to a subculture which, let’s face it, has taken its fair share of ridicule in the past? I’m not sure.  At times, moments of sensitivity do crack through, with stories of ill health, social exclusion and the basic liberty of mutual celebration. Regardless of the tender love shown in a series of 240 pound plus men, it is indisputably hard to ignore the tone that alot of the Juggalos possess (frustration at the best of times).

What Sean Dunne does bring to us, in his own words, is a misunderstood group of people in which this short documentary gives them a forum to dispense their opinions, and there are some interesting ones in there, i’ll tell you that. Through all the “Woop Woop’s” I tried not to reminisce back to a favourite Insane Clown Posse lyric of mine (for solely comedic use) , “fuckin’ magnets; how do they work?”

and instead absord the truly genuine aspects of Dunne’s filming which allows an honest insight into those featured in this film.

Even if this documentary has maybe confirmed that I won’t be donning the black and white Juggalo face paint and attending next years Gathering of the Juggalos

, I do commend Sean Dunne for directing a short film that pays little regard to social anxieties towards Juggalos, though somehow I think the stigma attached is a little too hard to shake off for it to be given true justice.

I was pulled in by the title and not let down by my presumptions. Please be equally intrigued and watch this.
